When do I need to use a safety glass?

Accepted Answer

You will need to use a safety glass if glass is being installed into a door (and the dimensions are bigger than 250mm), the glass being fitted is low level (under 800mm from the floor) or it is within 300mm from a door. This is the law and for your own safety. This applies to external and internal doors, garages, sheds etc.

It is often recommended that you use safety glass when installing some shelves, tabletops and mirrors (which can be safety backed). If at all unsure, feel confident that we can advise you on this and many other aspects of works that you are doing.

Question 2

The rebates on my door are not that thick, what can I do to ensure that safety glass is still fitted?

Accepted Answer

Safety glass comes in all different types. The most popular for doors is 6.4 Laminated or toughened glass. 6.4 laminated is 6.4mm thick and if it was going to be put into a door then the rebate would need to be able to take this size glass. However, both clear and obscured glass can be toughened. These come in a 4mm range which fits into almost all doors and is perfectly safe.

There is also ½ hour fire rated glass which is also a safety glass. This is normally used in schools or public places and comes in clear and obscured. Some also has wires in it which look like a grid.

What is the difference between bevelled and polished edges?

Polished edges are rounded edges which ensure that you will not cut yourself and offer a neat finish to mirrors or glass. Bevelling is often seen in 9 pane doors and some mirrors and shows a frame effect.

The bevel can show up to 38mm from the edge and as small as 5mm. The standard size is 25mm.

What colours and sizes are available for the splashbacks and glass tiles?

Please see a list of colours on our Products page. However this is not a conclusive range. If you would like you can bring in a colour and we can match it to whichever colour you would like.
With regards to size, these are ‘made to measure’, so you can have whichever size you would like or which fits!

Please make sure that you take into account the space available for manoeuvring when ordering glass splash backs. If you are at all unsure, the please contact us and we can advise or do a site survey (if we are fitting the glass) and can suggest the best course of action.

Question 5

I have a single paned door/window but would like to replace with double glazing. Can this be done?

Accepted Answer

As long as the rebate is big enough and the frame is suitable then this can be done. Double glazed units are made to a minimum of 14mm. Depending on how you would like to units bedded in would determine if this was possible.

We also do UPVC windows and doors, so if replacing the single panes with double glazed units was not an option, you would always have the option of UPVC.

Question 6

I have a traditional lead light which is broken. Can this be repaired?

Accepted Answer

It would depend how intricate and how much damage had been done to the lead light. In some cases a repair is a viable option and we can do this. If it was not an option, then we are able to completely replace the lead light with a new traditional lead light, the same as the one which is broken, although this is often expensive.

The other option is to use decralead to make a replica using a single pane of glass. This is then a safer option as it is far harder to break one solid pane than it is push through a traditional lead light.
